Overview
As well as ushering in the Cabriolet bodyshell, the arrival of the AJ6 engine gave Jaguar the chance to refocus the car’s marketing. Although it lacked the ultimate grunt of the V12, the new engine and manual transmission package added spporting appeal into the mix, and although it shouldn’t have worked, the six-cylinder XJ-S actually went on to sell rather well. Sport versions were introduced later on to reflect the tastes of the ‘80s; as well as a range of questionable body kits and trim options, diluting the original car’s appeal.
